In the present study, FSH was administrated to 9 Japanese Black Cattle by one intramuscular injection (one-shot FSH) and repeated intramuscular injections (repeated FSH) and their superovulation effects were compared. For one-shot FSH the hormone (30AU) was used in the form of a mixture with 5ml Aluminum hydroxide gel (3mg/ml) and for repeated FSH the hormone dissolved in saline was used in decreasing doses (5,5,3,3,2 and 2,20AU in total) six times every 12 hours over three days. PGF2alpha analogue (750mug) was also administrated twice 48 and 56 hours after one-shot FSH or the first injection of repeated FSH. Artificial insemination was performed on the animals during their metestrus, and 7days later embryos were collected and corpora lutea and large ovarian follicle were examined. Obvious signs of estrus appeared in 8 out of 9 cows in one-shot FSH and all of the 9 cows in repeated FSH. Corpora lutea, large ovarian follicles, collected embryos and transferable embryos were 8.7+-5.3 (mean+-S.D), 2.9+-1.5, 6.7+-6.4 and 4.1+-3.4 in number per cow in one-shot FSH, and 9.6+-5.7, 1.9+-1.7, 8.6+-5.8 and 4.1+-2.8 in repeated FSH. There was no significant difference between the means in any of the examined items. These results suggest that one-shot administration of FSH can be used as a simple and effective treatment with the hormone to induce superovulation.
