In the present study, to obtain the fundamental knowledge of blackening phenomena in heartwood of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), 26-year-old trees originated from seedlings were cut down from three different sites (upper, middle, and lower positions of one slope). After cutting down, wood color (L*), moisture content, pH, and potassium content in heartwood were measured. Diameter at breast height and tree height of sugi trees in the lower site showed higher values compared to those of the upper site. The L* value in the lower site apparently showed lower values compared to those of the upper and middle sites. In all the site, significant, negative correlations were found between L* value and moisture content, pH, and potassium content In addition, there were significant positive correlations among moisture content pH and potassium content. On the other hand, a significant relationship between diameter at breast height and L* was not found. These results indicated that growth characteristics of trees did not always affect on the formation of blackening heartwood.
