The aptitude of the green alga Ulva pertusa as a diet for purple sea urchin Anthocidaris crassispina

A study was undertaken to find out the aptitude of green alga Ulva pertusa, which grows luxuriously and cause severe environmental problems along the coast of Japan, as a diet for the underutilized purple sea urchin Anthocidaris crassispina at subtidal barren areas. The sea urchin caught at subtidal barren were fed with Ulva pertusa for two months, and its effects on increasing the gonad somatic index (GSI) , proximate composition, extractive nitrogen content, colors, and free amino acid compositions of the gonad were assessed in comparison with those fed with wakame Undaria pinnatifida, fish meat sheet Trachurus japonicus, and amanori Porphyra spp. The effect of the Ulva pertusa on increasing the GSI of the purple sea urchin was lower than those of wakame, but almost similar to other diets. There were no clear differences in proximate composition, extractive nitrogen content, and colors of the sea urchin gonads among the various diets. The bitter-tasting amino acids in the gonad of sea urchin fed with Ulva pertusa were comparatively lower than those fed with other diets. These results suggested that Ulva pertusa was useful as the diet for controlling the bitter-tasting amino acids in the sea urchin gonad.
