Life history of Caprella acanthogaster (Amphipoda, Crustacea), a fouling organism on fishery facilities

We describe the life history of Caprella acanthogaster found on kelp (Laminaria japonica) cultivations during 1999 - 2000 and 2002 - 2003 on the Pacific coast of southern Hokkaido, Japan. A population of C. acanthogaster was established at the study site by immigration of large individuals in April, and the density increased with increasing water temperature. In September, when temperature was the highest, the density rapidly decreased and remained low until spring. In late spring, an overwintering generation disappeared and a new generation occurred. Continuous breeding was observed during late spring to summer, which suggests several generations occurred concurrently. Although artificial substrates were an important habitat for this species, they were used during only spring and summer at the study. Considering its immigration in spring and rapid emigration in summer, C. acanthogaster may be able to maintain its population by positive moving between artificial substrates and other habitats.
