Root distribution of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) under field condition with vinyl mulch

We compared root indexes (1ength, weight, diameter, distribution, etc.) of 5 field-grown Chinese cabbage cultivars (Daifuku, Knkai65, Sakumidori3, Satokaze, Yuuki) with transplanting and direct seeding cultivation under vinyl mulching from 1998 to 1999 (summer and autumn cropping, 2 times a year). The roots were collected from soil suface to 40 cm deep. Clear differences of root indexes among cultivars were not observed. But soil hardness affected the root characteristics noticeably. The root length of the plant grown in hard soil (hardness index of 22 mm) was 1424 m plant-l (28-48% of the other cultivation, 12-17 mm of the index), the fine root diameter was 131 mum (139-170%), the fine root length/weight ratio was 397 m g-1 (32-36%), the root length density was 1.81 cm cm-3 (28-5396 ) and the root suface area was 0.64 m2 (46-78%). However, the shoot growth was not damaged although the root growth was depressed. The transplanting cultivation increased the fine root weight and decreased the thick root length compared to when using direct seeding.
