Smoke heating of logs treated by transpirational drying

Two sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) trees were harvested and then were dried by the transpirational drying for two months. One was harvested in April 2001, and the other, in August 2001. After the transpirational drying, the logs were smoke-heated for 40 hours at 80 deg C. After that, changes in the moisture content and damage to logs were investigated. The moisture content in sapwood decreased as a result of transpirational drying. In addition, the ratio of the moisture content of the log felled in spring was greater than that of the one felled in summer. Smoke heating with conventional treatment duration and temperature resulted in a increasing of occurrence of damages in logs, such as surface checks. These results obtained in this study indicate that changes in the temperature and duration of heating when using smoke-heating treatments are necessary when transpirational-dried logs are treated with smoke heating.
