Prescription of nutrient solutions suitable for the 'Black beauty'-type eggplant [Solanum melongena] 'Kurowashi' on the rockwool facility "Kochi system" in plastic houses

To reduce the occurrence of leaf yellowing and stabilize the yield of the eggplant cv. 'Kurowashi' (Solanum melonga var. esculentum Nees. ) in forcing culture using the Kochi system of rockwool cultivation, optimum composition and concentration of the nutrient solution was examined. 1. For cultivation using a nutrient solutions made according to the Yamazaki solution for eggplant (EC 1.8 dS/m), the magnesium (Mg) content in yellowing leaf was fairly low. 2. When the concentration of Mg in the nutrient solution increased from 2.5 me/L to 3.7 me/L, Mg content in leaves and the yield was increased. When the concentrations of Mg and potassium (K) in the nutrient solution were adjusted to 3.2me/L and 6.5 me/L, respectively; becoming an Mg/K equivalent amount ratio of two, the Mg content in leaves and the yield was relative high, and the incidence of leaf yellowing was relative low, as compared with those for an Mg/K ratio of three. 3. We recommended that the optimum concentrations of each element in the nutrient solution be: NO3-N 10.3 me, NH4-N 1.6 me, P 4.7 me, K 6.5 me, Mg 3.2 me, and Ca 2.6me. However, when the electric conductivity of the nutrient solution rose over 3dS/m, elements except for Mg should be reduced to 0.8 of the basal amount.
