Changes of Antioxidant Activities of Ecklonia cava with Harvesting Period

The changes of antioxidant activity of Ecklonia cava were determined according to harvesting period using linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition and the scavenging of DPPH radicals, superoxide anion radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and hydrogen peroxide. Higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were found in grown algae than in young algae, while they decreased during the reproductive period. Of the solvent fractions from a crude methanol extract of E. cava, the butanol fraction exhibited the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity.
