Isolation of Herbicidal Compounds from the Fruit of Zanthoxylum schinifolium S. et. Z.

This study was conducted to determine the herbicidal activity of allelochemicals in the fruit of Zanthoxylum schinifolium S. et. Z. and identify the herbicidal compounds. Methanol extract from the fruit of Z. schinifolium was purified by a series of chromatographic techniques including silica gel flash column chromatography, gel filtration chromatography, and HPLC. The final HPLC gave two active fractions and two herbicidal compounds were obtained. By GC/MS analysis, the herbicidal compounds were identified as psoralen and bergapten of furocoumarins.
