State of diversity research on fungi in Lithuania

The investigations on Lithuanian mycobiota have been provided since the end of 18th century. The rate of identification and registration of new species for Lithuania has significantly increased during the last 25 years. During the last decade on average nearly 120 species were annually registered as new for the country, a 5 new species were described. The estimate of the total number of currently known fungi in Lithuania is about 6 500 species: 3 600 ascomycetes, including lichenised and anamorphic fungi, 2 200 basidiomycetes, 260 zygomycetes, 20 chytridiomycetes, 235 oomycetes, and 190 myxomycetes. At least up to 11 500 species are expected to be recorded in the country.
