Plant nutrient balances are considered as important agro-environmental indicators characterizing the efficiency and sustainability of farm activities. Routine calculations of NPK balances using internationally recommended methods are planned for all commercial farms operating in vulnerable zones of Latvia. NPK balance calculation model applicable to Latvia conditions has been developed by authors and its plausibility test was performed in selected model farms within 1999-2003. To run the model various input values, e.g. manure production, chemical composition, NPK losses etc. are necessary to apply. For routine calculations these values mainly are not directly measured but used some averages, so called reference values. Derivation and application of reference values for NPK balance calculation has important impact on validity and accuracy of obtained results. To avoid the misinterpretation of NPK balance calculation results which might lead to unreasoned decisions and affect the farming activities reference values should be well motivated and on high quality.
