Villanueva, G.C.(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State Univ. - Rosario Campus, Rosario, La Union (Philippines) | Tandang, L.L.
The study was conducted during dry and wet season in Rosario, La Union [Philippines] from October 2003 to September 2004. It aimed to evaluate and compare the agronomic and post harvest characteristics of six peanut varieties, and to determine the effect of paclobutrazol application in six peanut varieties. Results revealed that the six peanut varieties differed significantly from each other in terms of days to flowering and harvesting, percent survival, herbage yield, number of pod per plant, weight of 100 seeds, harvest index, yield per plot, percent swelling and shrinkage and moisture content during dry season planting. Similar results were obtained during the wet season. In addition, the plant height, the number of seeds per pod and the dry matter content of the six peanut varieties also differed significantly among the peanut varieties. Combined analysis of variance over two seasons indicated no significant difference in terms of yield which ranged from 1.12 t/ha during wet season to 1.15 t/ha during the dry season. Among the six peanut varieties tested four yielded statistically similar but significantly higher than the farmer's variety. They are Biyaya 14, 12 and 10 and NSIC Pn 9. The study also revealed that Paclobutrazol application during wet season cropping significantly enhanced almost all agronomic and post harvest characteristics measured in six peanut varieties. No significant interaction effect between variety and paclobutrazol application was noted on majority of parameters considered in this study except for plant height at 60 days after planting (i.e. 35 days after paclobutrazol application) and at harvesting and percent survival.
