Nitrogen nutrition of soybean as affected by nitrate-nitrogenapplication

Investigations were carried out to study the effects of varying levelsof nitrate- nitrogen on the absorption of nitrogen content by differentplant parts in soybean [Glycine max. (L.) Merrill] cultivar undergreenhouse conditions at Institute of Pure and Applied Biology, BahauddinZakariya University, Multan during 2003. The treatments were consisted offour levels of nitrate-nitrogen (0 mM, 2 mM, 5 mM, 10 mM KNO3). Soybeancultivar NARC-1 was used as test plant. The treatments were arranged in acompletely randomized design and having six replications. The resultsshowed that nitrogen content increased in both shoot and root tissues withconcurrent increasing levels of nitrate-nitrogen in the media. Furthermore,nitrogen content in shoot and root parts of the plant increased with theage of crop growth. The various plant parts maintained the maximumcontent of nitrogen in plants harvested at middle of pod growth, i.e. 10weeks after sowing compared to that of harvested at flowering stage, i.e. 5weeks after sowing. In terms of proportionate distribution percentage ofnitrogen nutrient, the shoot and root parts of the plant retained two-thirdand one-third of the nitrogen nutrient, respectively. It is inferred thataddition of a small amount of nitrate-nitrogen had synergistic effects onthe assimilation of nitrogen content and its uptake during the growthperiod.
