Incidence of leishmaniasis in Kurram Agency, NWFP, Pakistan

The present survey was carried out in Kurram Agency of NWFP in January2002, to investigate incidence of Leishmaniasis as was directed by the thenDirector VRI as a result of press statements in different Daily News papersabout spread of Leishmaniasis in human population of the area. In subcontinentregions there is always man to man infection through the bite of infected sandfly and dogs are not invoked in transmission of diseases. Different villages ofKurram Agency were visited and results were recorded. Both thin thick bloodsmears Deere prepared front infected individuals, fixed in Methanol, stainedwith Giemsa's stain and examined under microscope (100x) in Parasitology Lab.of Veterinary Research Institute (VRI), Peshawar. A total of 315 blood sampleswere collected out of which 29 (9.2%) were found positive. Age wise infectionrecorded was 1-12 year 17 cases (58.62%). 13-20 years 8 (27.58%) and 30-50years 4 cases (13.79%), respectively. Site wise infection was common on hands,foot, nose and ribs, etc. It was interesting to know that the disease is locallycalled as Kal Dana i.e. one year old. According to the information available thisdisease was hardly 10-12 months old. In the light of our results it wasproposed that Leishmaniasis in human population at this stage may be curtailedthrough vaccination, proper medication, malaria control program, improvement ofelectricity voltage, use of mosquitoes net during night, killing of infected straydogs vindicated by hygiene, sanitation etc in endemic areas of Kurram Agency.
