The paper presents the characteristics of the sorptive properties of soils in East Poland. This study involved nearly all soil units occurring in our country. The results show the basic soil properties determined by the methods commonly used in Polish laboratories and illustrating the sorptive capacity of the soils determined by the modified Mehlich method. Soil organic matter content had the greatest influence on the sorptive capacity of the soils. The content of organic matter in mineral soils was determined by the kind of utilization, hence the sorptive capacity is dependent on their utilization. Besides organic matter, grain-size distribution was an important factor influencing the sorptive capacity of soils, especially the content of very fine and colloidal particles, i.e. the kind of soil. The distribution of cations in the sorptive complex depended on pedogenesis (soil forming process), that is only their typology. It appeared particularly in profiles of podzolic, lessive and brown soils. Total exchange cations in the sorptive complex and the base saturation depended on the kind of the parent rock, including the presence of carbonates
