The present state and perspectives are discussed of molecular manipulation of animal genome to improve animal performance. Transfer of foreign genes or modification of endogenous genes may render new phenotypes in just one generation. Growth rate, meat production, milk yield and composition are the main targets for farm animal transgenesis. Also considered are: enhanced resistance to diseases as well as increased wool growth and better wool quality. The introduction of foreign genes into domestic animals has also become a reality. The most likely application of transgenic animals is production of human pharmaceutical proteins. Other genomic modifications, such as gene knock-out or substitution, designated yo modify quality of animal products, must await improving of molecular techniques. Problems of the safety of genome manipulations of farm animlas, safety of products derived from genetically modified animals, and legislation problems concerning animal biotechnology are also considered
