The goal of the study was to evaluate, individually or in complex, several measures expected to be good indicators of the changes of body reserves in lactating cows. These traits were body condition score (POK), live body weight (MC), ultrasound measure of muscle area (UPM) and cow's size index (KAL). Estimates of repeatability and heritability were found high for all traits considered. Permanent environmental effect was significant only for POK. The results indicated that biological foundation for the complex of considered traits, which reflects size and condition of a lactating cow, seemed to be similar for all breeds and parities, and did not change significantly within parity. It is suggested, that both body condition (POK) and frame (KAL) should be included in a selection index aiming at improvement of energy balance of lactating cows
