Genetic improvement of dairy goats

The history of domestication, breeding and breeds of dairy goats in chosen countries, including Poland, are briefly, presented in the first part of the paper. The significance of maintaining and breeding of goats for milk and meat is discussed. The second part deals with the breeding programmes realized in countries where goat breeding important sphere of animal production, and where efforts to genetically improve goat populations have routinely been undertaken. Breeding goals, methods of performance recording and production levels of particular populations are compared. Broad discussion of the infrastructure and organization of breeding programmes and methods of breeding value estimation in goats is presented aiming at possible implementation in Poland of some solutions accepted elsewhere
