Tropical sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) varieties have been undergoing field tests at the. Sugarcane Research Centre farms at Guneid, (Lat. IS"N, Long. 33°E), since 1999. The appearance of a disease with a large cauliflower-like outgrowth on the neck or crown portion of the beet root is reported. The disease was observed on two beet varieties 'Posada' and 'Monsa'. It is characteristic and typical of the cancerous crown gall disease of sugar beet caused by the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens L. At present, the incidence of this disease is low, however, its economic impact is expected to be huge if the level ofincidence increases, since infected roots get pennanentIy malformed and robbed of stored sugars and other growth materials
