The aim of this article is to define directions and measure, creating opportunities of modernization of the agricultural cooperatives. This is the way for the successful application of the Common Agricultural Policy and their integration in the European agriculture. The issues of the cooperative theoretical basis, the agricultural cooperatives' features, challenges and development opportunities, deriving from the European Union membership are reviewed herewith. Suggestions regarding the directions and measures of the policy supporting the cooperative movement of the sector are made.
