[Change of glutathione reductase activity in barley green leaves under the influence of Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations]

Research results of the influence of Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations on the activity of glutathione reductase (GR) in green leaves of 7-day old barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) germs were presented. High degree of enzyme susceptibility in vitro to the low concentrations of the observed cations (1 mkM) was noted. At the same time, Cd2+ and Pb2+ injection into plant cuts or roots caused the significant stimulation of GR activity in the conditions of high cation concentrations (up to 0,5 mM and 3 mM accordingly). Increasing of GR activity in cut leaves was observed against the background of the lowering of protein and chlorophyll amount in plants. Penetration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ cations into plant roots caused the oppression of germs growth and in tests with Cd2+ - the lowering of chlorophyll content plants. It was supposed that cations of heavy metals could induce the GR activity that could make it possible to maintain the high level of reduced glutathione in plant cells. However, the level of such GR activity was insufficient for thorough compensation of the negative influence of cations on the biochemical processes, especially on biosynthesis of protein and chlorophyll
