Nitrogen fertilization of new potato varieties of the Swiss list | Fumure azotee et nouvelles varietes de pommes de terre cultivees en Suisse

Field trials have been carried out with the varieties Appell, Naturella, Fontane, Lady Claire and Lady Rosetta from 2002 to 2004 at Changins (VD), and Reckenholz (ZH). Nitrogen levels from 0 to 200 kg/ha have been split and applied from planting to crop covering. The varieties showed similar response to N fertilization but the yield potentials showed important differences. Lady Claire and Lady Rosetta had the highest requirement. The maximum yield was generally reached at 120 kg N/ha in Changins but in Reckenholz, with previous manure application, already 80 kg N/ha could be sufficient depending on the year. Nitrogen favoured the commercial part of the yield, also big tuber formation and reduced starch content particularly for Lady Claire. N-fertilization influenced neither the culinary and processing qualities nor the sensitivity to black spot and storability of tubers.
