Se estableció un sistema in vitro con plántulas de caña de azúcar (Saccharum, sp) procedentes de meristemos, con el hongo Puccinia melanocephala Sydow, agente causal de la roya en dicho cultivo. Fue posible obtener la implantación del patógeno y se observó y respuesta diferencial entre variedades, que se correspondió con los grados de resistencia mostrados por las mismas en campo. El sistema permitió valorar la variedad B 4362 como altamente susceptible (grado 5), My 5514 medianamente resistentes (grado 3), PR 980 y CP 5243 resistentes (grado 2) y Ja 60-5 con reacción medianamente resistente (grado 3). Estos resultados son de gran interés para los estudios fisiológicos de la interacción roya-caña de azúcar, pero no se estima de utilidad como sistema de selección precoz masivo por su complejidad metodológica.

Patogen infection and differential response of vitroplantlests to rust were obtained corresponding to natural inoculum in fields. The system showed the variety B 4362 as highly susceptible (rate 5), My 5514 moderately resistant (rate 3), PR 980 and CP 5243 resistants (rate 2) and Ja 60-5 moderately resistant (rate 3). This system is applied to physiopathology studies in the rust-sugarcane interaction, but it isn' t possible to massive selection.
