Lasius brunneus (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) a cork-oak pest in NE Spain, 1: Characterization of its effects and distribution | Lasius brunneus (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) una plaga del corcho en el NE de España, 1: Caracterización de sus efectos y extensión de la misma

Spanish; Castilian. Se describen las características de una nueva plaga de hormigas (Lasius brunneus) que ataca el alcornocal. El efecto de la hormiga se detecta por la presencia de serrín (ataque actual) o de manchas irregulares (ataque pasado). Se valora una posible relación de la infestación con el diámetro del árbol, así como la influencia de una infestación pasada sobre la actual. Se observa una gran variabilidad, tanto en fincas como en parcelas, que impide extraer conclusiones generales. El número de árboles afectados ha aumentado con el tiempo en las fincas estudiadas. Se acota la distribución geográfica para toda Cataluña (NE España) observándose que la misma se encuentra limitada a dos zonas y demostrándose una clara relación de la presencia de la hormiga con la altitud y el clima.

English. A new ant pest (Lasius brunneus) attacking cork-oak woods is described. Presently infested trees show the presence of sawdust in the cracks and fissures of the cork. Previous infestations are detected by the irregularly shaped marks of a very dense cork. Possible relationships of the attack with tree diameter, as well as the influence of a previous infestation on present attack are also studied. A great variability of infestation (% attacked trees) is observed, both at the level of stands or of private properties, that prevents general conclusions. The number of affected trees has increased in time in the studied localities. The geographical extension is established in Catalonia (NE Spain) being observed that is limited to two small areas and showing a clear relationship with the altitude and climate.
