Performance test of solar water heater

Solar energy has become economically feasible for domestic applications and low temperature industrial water heating in Ethiopia. As a result considerable number of solar water heaters were installed on houses in the last few years and imported and locally manufactured units become abundant in the market. The performance of solar water heaters depends on design of the heater and the location, where it is installed. The certification of performance of solar water heaters by a third party is necessary to assure the product quality. Towards this goal, a solar collector test setup similar to that recommended by ASHRAE and ISO with a data logger for automatic data acquisition of climatic data and collector and storage tank temperatures was designed and built. This paper, therefore, presents the test procedure and the test set-up of solar water heaters, and the results of the performance test for a locally manufactured solar water heater, which is necessary to verify the application of the set-up.
