A review of ecology and management of Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. in Arid and Semi-arid ecosystem of Ethiopia

Prosopis juliflora was introduced in Ethiopia in the early 1970s. Originally it was introduced for afforestation and to mitigate desertification in the arid and semi-arid region while providing shade, fuelwood and forage. It has since become a weed and a serious problem of rangelands, watering areas and farmlands. However, the species has several important uses. It provides fuelwood and charcoal, fodder, shade, fence and improvement of both microclimate and soil fertility. The paper reviews the place occupied by the species in Ethiopia in terms of its ecological, economic and socio-function. The paper recommends possible control and management options that include prevention of seed dispersal, mechanical eradication, prescribed burning and control through use. The review is expected to contribute towards the ongoing effort on the development of a national action plan on the invasive alien species.
