Investigation of the effect of different irrigation regimes on the quantity and quality of sugar beet

For the determination of water stress effects in the different growth stages and the optimum water use of sugar beet on quantity and quality properties, a study was performed on completely randomize blocks design in factorial experiment with 12 traits and 4 replications from 1999 to 2001 in agricultural research center of Hamadan . The first factor was non-irrigated at different growth stages with 3 levels and the second factor was the number of non-irrigated with 4 levels in comparison with a check trait without drought stress. The combine analyses of results showed that significant difference for the quantity properties i.e. the yield of root, sugar and white sugar and sugar properties i.e. sugar content, sugar white content and extraction coefficient in different growth stages and the number of non- irrigation was significant (P،ـ0.01). Non sugar properties i.e. potassium, sodium, alpha-amino nitrate and molasses was significant . There was significant difference (P،ـ0.01) between traits and check on leaf relative moisture ( R.W.C.) and soil moisture content. The measurement of physiological properties i.e. shoot yield and dry matter showed that only shoot yield was significant. Water use efficiency at the first, second and third stages on the basis of total root yield were 2.55, 2.11 and 2.51 Kg/m 3 , on the basisi of sugar content were 0.41,0.39 and 0.50 Kg/m 3 and on the basis of white sugar yield were 0.34,0.33 and 0.43 Kg/m 3 respetively. Non-irrigated more than once in different stages caused damage to the quality and quantity of sugar beet. In general, drought stress decreased the yield and quality of sugar beet which was related to time and the intensity of stress. Decrease of the root and sugar yield because of the stress at the root growth and suger accumulation stages were more severe. Sugar content, white sugar content and extraction coefficient showed the most decrease in sugar accumulation stage.
