General aspects of non-food cultures

English. This paper presents some general aspects of non-food crops as well as particular features that make them crops of interest. For the five groups of crops and the seven industrial sectors presented, the current state of affairs is briefly described and perspectives for their future are put forward, particularly with respect to the applications of these crops that are encouraged by the European Union. It is shown how the perspectives of development are very different for each of the large groups of end-uses and the different possible applications of natural fibres are briefly described. All the major crops that can be utilised in production chains of possible interest are mentioned. It is noted how new problems arise when traditional crops are cultivated and employed for new end-uses. The same applies when abandoned crops are reintroduced and when completely new crops are used. It is shown how research carried out in recent years has enabled numerous bottlenecks to be overcome during both crop production and the initial industrial processing phase. It is concluded that the slow diffusion of non-food crops is not because of technical problems but because they are not competitive enough. This factor can only be overcome if environmental factors are taken into consideration and if political incentives would favour their uptake
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. Vengono inquadrati gli aspetti generali delle colture non alimentari e ricordate le motivazioni che le rendono di interesse. Per i cinque gruppi di colture e i sette settori di destinazione industriale, viene brevemente descritta la situazione attuale e vengono accennate le prospettive, soprattutto in funzione degli impegni sottoscritti a livello europeo. Infine, vengono ricordate le principali colture rientranti nelle possibili filiere di interesse. Viene evidenziato come la ricerca degli ultimi anni abbia consentito di superare numerosi colli di bottiglia, sia nella fase di produzione agricola, sia in quella di prima trasformazione industriale. Come conclusione del sintetico quadro tracciato viene sottolineato che la lenta diffusione delle colture non alimentari non dipende da problemi tecnici, ma da una loro scarsa competitività. Questa può essere superata solo se verranno presi in maggior considerazione gli aspetti ambientali e se opportuni indirizzi politici ne favoriranno realmente l´avvio
