English. Isatis tinctoria is a popular source of the natural indigo for dyers, particularly in the textile industry. The cropping economics of this species appears nonetheless subordinated to the chemical weeding that proved more cost-effective compared to the manual or mechanical ones. The work was undertaken in the year 2003 to identify valuable preemergence herbicides for woad. All chemical used in this experiment acted selectively at large, but Amaranthus retroflexus and Echinochloa crus-galli were characterized as core species reflecting the scarce herbicide pressure on them. Overall, oxyfluorfen and methazachlor displayed a good level of weed control, whilst trifluralin, pendimethalin, methazachlor and oxyfluorfen positively impacted on the blue pigment yield in the sole first cut that, along with the second one, yielded more indigo

Isatis tinctoria è una delle fonti d'indaco naturale; l'economia della coltivazione di questa specie richiede il controllo chimico delle infestanti, per evitare il costoso diserbo meccanico e manuale. Il presente studio è stato impostato nel 2003 per individuare erbicidi tecnicamente validi. Tutti i prodotti impiegati sono risultati selettivi. L'infestazione è stata rappresentata principalmente da Amarantus retroflexus ed Echinochloa crus-galli, verso cui la maggior parte degli erbicidi ha manifestato un controllo insufficiente. Oxyfluorfen e methazachlor hanno presentato il miglior controllo, mentre l'azione di trifluralin, pendimethalin, methazachlor e oxyfluorfen si è riflessa sulla produzione d'indaco solo nella prima raccolta, che, insieme alla seconda, ha dato la maggiore produzione di pigmento blu
