Embryogenic tissue cultures were first initiated during the 1980's from immature embryos of maize and have since been used widely for efficient and rapid regeneration of large clonal populations of normal and fertile maize plants. Such totipotent cultures have played a critical role in the production of transgenic maize and other cereals.
