Circumstances of veterinary service in India and Bangladesh

We have made every effort to conduct surveys and gather information in order to fulfill the need to be more fully aware of education and conditions of veterinary medicine in other Asian countries that are involved with Japan in order to serve as a guide to the approach to the study of veterinary medicine in Japan. We had the opportunity this time to conduct surveys and gather materials in India and Bangladesh. In India, veterinarians register with state movements and, furthermore, in the case of practicing veterinarians, there is also necessary for authorized practicing veterinarians to become registered. Through this collection of information, we realized that it is necessary in India for veterinarians as well as authorized practicing veterinarians to be registered by state governments. The registration of authorized practicing veterinarians must be renewed every 5 years. In addition, the system of post-graduate clinical training, the introduction of which is currently anticipated in Japan, was a 6 months period and we confirmed that it has become institutionalized in India. In Bangladesh, there is one university that teaches veterinary medicine, the National University, and veterinary medicine is taught there in a 5 years program with 50 students enrolled in each years. In urban Bangladesh, there is a tendency for veterinarians who work at government-affiliated Livestock Hygiene Centers to switch to small animal clinical medicine.
