Considerations of functional shift of the log auction market: A case study in Hita area, Oita prefecture [Japan]

The aim of this paper is to clarify the change of cargo booking structure and functional shift of log auction market under the present circumstance where domestic timber price depreciates, almost doing exploitation production cannot expect the profit. Hita area is the nationwide producing area of cedar ordinary wood, and the market has especially important meaning in material circulation. The result of analysis of log auction market in Hita area showed the following 4 points. 1. Increase of the log auction market itself shipment, especially from itself company-owned forest. 2. Increase of the ratio which the quantity of shipment superior companies occupies. 3. Change of degree of dependence and utilization object of financial machinery. 4. Enlargement of cargo booking range. From these change, while the environment which surrounds domestic forestry changes suddenly, it is thought that the function of log auction market has been shifting away from tying with the small forest owner and the sawmill and formation of log price to merely the source of supply.
