This paper intends to resolve the factors behind the increase in the rice that farmers give for free to their relatives or friends. Recently, rice production in Japan has been decreasing, owing to reorganization under the WTO as well as due to domestic circumstances such as reduced consumption and surplus supply. In consideration of this scenario, the structure of rice production seems to be heading towards differentiation in two respects, namely merchandising and self-sufficiency. In conclusion, the increase in 'gratuitous rice' was confirmed to correlate to self-sufficiency in production, and was further expected to diversify rice distribution.
