Fertilizer efficiency and effective split application of anaerobically digested dairy slurry to timothy (Phleum pratense L.) meadow

Surface application effects of anaerobically digested dairy slurries on the performance of timothy (Phleum pratense L.) pure meadow were investigated in the Konsen and Tokachi districts of eastern Hokkaido. Moreover, these investigations led to the establishment of effective split application for anaerobically digested dairy slurry. The estimated effects of anaerobically digested dairy slurry were sufficient when based on the method presently used for slurry in Hokkaido. With this method, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents in anaerobically digested dairy slurry are multiplied by the coefficients (0.4, 0.4 and 0.8, respectively). The phosphorus and potassium values are equivalent to the amounts in chemical phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. The nitrogen value is corrected according to the quality of slurry and application time. Furthermore, this paper indicated that ammonium nitrogen content in anaerobically digested dairy slurry was also equivalent to the amount in chemical nitrogen fertilizer. As a result of this study, it was found that this method was more sufficient than the former, when ammonium nitrogen content was more than 50% of the total nitrogen content in the slurry. When anaerobically digested dairy slurry was applied to timothy meadow in autumn or following spring, more than 80% of its annual effects appeared in the first cut. Consequently, in this case, it was recommended that the amount of chemical fertilizer for the first cut could be decreased. It was found that splitting 40t ha sup(-1) year sup(-1) of anaerobically digested dairy slurry into the same quantity in both of autumn and spring was the most effective on dry matter yield in timothy meadow.
