The potential of Patented Novel low-done Metaldehyde formulations for the control of Golden Apple Snail in Rice in the Philippines: Effect of Application rate and timing

The potential of two novel patented formulations containing a lower dose of metaldehyde locally available as commercial products was tested for efficacy in controlling golden apple snail in transplanted rice. Screen different application treatments were tested to assess the effect of concentration, amount applied and timing. While damage was not much when the prevailing temperature was low, large differences among treatment were seen at higher temperature. In general, a pre-treatment of half the recommended dose and a full treatment at a higher dose were effective in controlling the snails. Comaparative tests of niclosamide, a widely used molluscicide showed comparable effectiveness with metaldehyde formulations. These materials offer good protection with lower environmental and monetary costs. The needed information and technical guidance in using these products should be provided when the materials become available in the market.
