Application of land use system approach to determine gaps in the technology development and utilization in Southern Mindanao, Philippines

The study tried to look into some issues which addressed the different components of the research process with the objective of enhancing the development and adoption of site-specific agricultural technologies. This applied the Land Use System Approach (LUS) in the identification of land suitability of specific land utilization types such as manga, durian, and coconut in ten soil series. Information on the land conditions and land quality requirements were gathered through soil physical and chemical analyses, actual field observation and secondary data. Protocols on the technology process of R and D [research and development] institutions, farmers' practices and involvement were taken from surveys. Results of the study show that mango is highly suitable in san Manuel, Cabangan, Matina and Tugbok soil series where rainfall is less 100-150 mm/mo, effective soil depth of greater 70 cm, slope of 0-8 percent, and well-drained soils. Similarly, cocon ut is highly suitable in these soil series but in areas with an average monthly rainfall of 150-250 mm/mo. Durian is highly suitable in Tugbok ans Matina series, which have an average monthly rainfall of 150-200 mm/mo, evenly distributed throughout the year. Poor performance of mango manifested information gaps in Camansa and San manuel series, where rainfall is greater 200mm/mo, durian in Bolinao and coconut in Malalag series. R and D institutions have similarities in the formulation of R and D agenda, of which participation of farmers was nil. Seventy percent of farmer-respondents confirmed non-involvement in research planning, development, packaging and transfer of technologies.
