Correlates of entrepreneurial attributes of duck farmers in selected municipalities of Laguna, Philippines

This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of duck farmer-enterpreneurs in relation to their level of entrepreneurship. It sought to describe the entrepreneurial characteristics or attributes of duck farmers and to ascertain the relationship between the characteristics of duck farmers and the level of entrepreneurship. Lastly, it determined the perceived socio-economic contributions of duck farmers to the community. Forty-two qualified duck farmer respondents were selected from six duck farming communities in four municipalities in the province of Laguna. The study employed descriptive statistics in analyzing the characteristics of duck farmers by level of entrepreneurship. Comparison of the groups based on the different characteristics was done using T-test for interval ratio scale data and Chi-square for nominal data. Spearman rank order correlation was used to determine the relationship between the characteristics of duck farmers and th e level of entrepreneurship. Findings of the study revealed that regardless of the level of entreprenueship, there existed some similarities in duck farmer-enterpreneurs' socio-demographic, socio-economic, and psychosocial characteristics, production and management system and interpreneurial values. Despite the advent of modern production technologies, the use of traditional method as well as a combination of modern and traditional methods is still prevalent, particularly in the feeding system and choice of feeds. Duck farmer-entrepreneurs were less dependent on others and more rational in making decisions. They also tended to have high values for locus of control, innovation and risk taking. The factors which significantly affected the level of entrepreneurship were education, household income, farmsize, production facilities/ infrastructure (feed storage, waterer, and water tank) and access to support services (market information source, government support services) and li nkage.
