Grain quality and iron density of Philippine rice cultivars as affected by season and location

Stability of iron-dense traits of rice cultivars in different environments and consumer acceptability of these varieties must be considered for breeding efforts on increasing the iron concentration of rice to succeed. Ten Philippine rice cultivars previously screened to have high grain iron content were subjected to G x E (genotype x environment) trial. The samples were planted in Batac, Ilocos Norte and Maligaya, Munoz, Nueva Ecija [Philippines] during the wet and dry seasons of 2002. Iron samples in brown rice form were determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICP-AES). During summer, higher grain iron was observed in some samples at Maligaya but the highly significant correlation coefficient between Batac and Maligaya samples suggests that the micronutrient concentrations among samples are fairly stable. Meanwhile, most of the cultivars exhibited lower grain iron during the wet season than dry season for both locations. Grain quality data of the samples were gathered during the 2001 wet season and 2002 dry season. Generally all milled samples had excellent physical attributes and were found to be acceptable in the consumer panel sensory evaluation. Crude protein values ranged from 6.3% to 9.1%. Most of the samples had intermediate to low apparent amylose content and low intermediate alkali spreading values. Cooked samples received acceptable ratings from the consumer panelists.
