In the last 15 years, Musa breeding programmes within the INIBAP Network have made significant accomplishments resulting to a number of new, high yielding, and disease resistant varieties of bananas and plantain. These varieties include both dessert and cooking types that may have good potential for smallholder production in the Philippines. The project aims to make available the improved varieties to small-scale farmers through the collaborative projects with PCARRD [Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] and several state universities in Luzon. These varieties were transferred from INIBAP international gene bank to the Philippines - through an appropriate Material Transfer Agreement. A total of 32,197 tissue-cultured planting materials of five improved hybrid and two locally-preferred cultivars were distributed to five state universities and colleges in Luzon where on-campus demonstration trials were set up aside from on-farm verification trials in farmers' fields in four agro-ecological zones. The introduced disease-resistant varieties are being evaluated as alternative or complimentary cultivars to rehabilitate the local banana industry, which is beset with a number of disease problems. Appropriate production system for optimum yield is also being developed. Other activities include training of project staff and farmer cooperators and field visits.
