Grain mineral density of postharvest processed and commercial milled rices as measured by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy

Distribution of mineral in the grain may vary from sample to sample and postharvest processing could have an effect on its mineral concentration. Six genotypes with high iron content in their brown rice form were subjected to different processing methods. These were PJ18, PR26685-PJ (G) 6, PR300256-JP-1, PR30220-Ph-1, PSB Rc18 and Dinorado. Nine commercial rice samples collected from different sources were also evaluated in terms of milling degree and iron concentration. Samples were individually packed in No.00 coin envelope for mineral content determination using 1CP-AES in Adelaide, Australia. Result showed no significant difference in the iron content of the samples dehulled manually and using forceps and Satake dehuller. However, significant loss of iron content in milled and washed rice was noted. The milling degree, whiteness and transparency of commercial milled rices were determined using the Satake Milling Meter. LMG Rice from Oriental Mindoro [Philippines] gave the highest values for all parameters measured.
