Seasonal abundance of rice pests in Caraga Region [Philippines]

Regular monitoring of rice pests in Caraga region was done to determine the seasonal occurrence of insect pests and diseases in Agusan and Surigao provinces. Seventeen species of insect pests were observed, however, only seven species were considered important. These insect pests include green leafhopper (GLH), Zigzag leafhopper (ZLH), brown planthopper (BPH), white-backed planthopper (WBPH), rice bug (RB), rice black bug (RBB) and white stemborer (WSB). WSB is regarded as the most serious pest of rice in Caraga based on the damage (2-21 percent whitehead) caused by the pest. WSB peaked in April-May and October-November during the December-May and June-November cropping seasons, respectively. Bacterial blight (BB) and sheath blight (ShB) were the dominant rice diseases observed in Caraga with high incidence of BB in December-May cropping. Other rice diseases such as bacterial leaf streak, rice blast and rice tungro virus disease were also present in the region.
