Effects of ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate as sources of non micropropagation of yam (Dioscorea rotundata)
1999
Villamor, C.C. | Birnbaum, E.H.
The effects of sources of nitrogen and media strength on shoot and root growth of two clones of Dioscorea rotundata were evaluated. The results indicated that clone T1.1 produced more roots and had longer internodes. Tuber-like swelling at the base of the plantlet was more frequent in Clone T1.1 while better shoot multiplication was observed in TDR 743 (4). Root formation was improved in half-strength media and when ammonium nitrate was omitted. On the otherhand, cultures in full-strength media had a higher percent of leaves in the biomass and growth value, regardless of whether both sources of nitrogen were present simultaneously. The frequency of occurrence of basal tuber-like swelling was higher in media devoid of ammonium nitrate.
