These studies were conducted in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 1999-2001. Combining ability effects were studied in a 4 x 4 diallel cross of wheat for yield and its components viz. flag leaf area, number of tillers per plant, peduncle length, 1000- grain weight and grain yield per plant. Highly significant mean square for GCA was found in all characters. The SCA mean square revealed highly significant differences for number of tillers per plant (2.23) and 1000-grain weight (8.31) significant for grain yield per plant (2.51) while non-significant differences were noted for flag leaf area (1.95) and peduncle length (0.60). Highly significant reciprocal mean squares were observed for flag leaf area (5.30), number of tillers per plant (2.32) and 1000-grain weight (6.93), significant for peduncle length (1.86) and non-significant for grain yield per plant (0.95). Number of tillers per pla nt and peduncle length showed additive type of gene action, as their GCA effects were greater than SCA. Remaining traits showed non-additive type of gene action. Variety Pasban-90 proved to be the best general combiner for number of tillers per plant (0.83), 1000-grain weight (2.2) and grain yield per plant (1.53) while hybrid TW-161 x 6039-1 proved to be the best specific combiner.
