Vegetative propagation of fourwing saltbush in highland Balochistan, Pakistan

Establishment of FWSB was studied using cuttings from mature FWSB plants at AZRC. The branch cuttings were planted at 1.5m x 1.5m spacing and each cutting was planted in a pit. Pits were dug to 30 cm depth. After planting, the pit was filled with soil to within 15 cm of the surface to allow 50 ml water harvesting. In February, March and April, four, four and one, cuttings sprouted respectively. It suggested that late winter/early spring planting of cuttings gave relatively better sprouting in vegetative propagation of FWSB. Under these conditions, it would be difficult to achieve success by vegetative propagation under natural conditions from April to October because of very high evapotranspiration rates. Out of total 72 cuttings planted, only nine sprouted and only one survived in September. No treatment and their interactions had significant effect upon sprouting. Direct vegetative propagation of FWSB in spring was not successful in Balochis tan due to poor root initiation by the cuttings and five to seven months long drought and very high post spring potential evapotranspiration rate.
