The maize synthetic EPS12 was chosen as the base material for a recurrent S1-progeny selection program to reduce damage by Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.). The criterion of selection was reduced tunnel length, but whenever family yield was equal or superior to mean yield averaged across families. The objectives of this investigation were: to estimate the advances produced by selection on the resistance to borer attack in the synthetic EPS12, correlated responses in other traits, and inbreeding depression changes across selection. Cycles of selection per se, selfed, and testcrossed to the initial cycle and to three tester inbreds were evaluated under artificial infestation conditions with S. nonagrioides and Ostrinia nubilalis (Hbn.). Selection reduced attack by O. nubilalis, but was not effective against S. nonagrioides larvae, while yield and other agronomic traits did not vary significantly. Selection was not effective mostly due to the positive correlation between yield and tunnel length by borers.
