Secretion, resorption and nectar chemistry of greater butterfly orchid Plantanthera chlorantha (Custer) Rchb. (Orchidaceae)

In 2000-01 nectar secretion and nectar chemistry of Platanthera flower life span. Secretion was differentiated into four stages: slow secretion (9-14 days), rapid secretion (6-12 h), nectar cessation (2 days), and nectar resorption (2 days). In 2000 flowers secreted, on average, maximum of 7.84 mcL of nectar, and 7.13 mcL of nectar in 2001. Successive phases of secretion were characterized by a decrease in nectar sugar percentage (from 27.5 percent during the early days of secretion to 5.58 percent during stage of resorption) and reduction of mass of sugars (from 1.13 to 0.32 mg). Sucrose was dominant in the nectar, fructose and glucose occurred in the proportion 1:1. During resorption all sugars in the nectar decreased, but the amino acid content did not change
