This paper presents the use of a Geographical Information System (GIS) in assessing the spatial distribution in the Widawa river catchment. A desktop GIS (ArcViev GIS and ArcViev Spatial Analyst extension) was developed to estimate the potential retention to research area. This paper explains how an integrated approach (involving analysis of various thematic maps and other attribute information of an industrial area using the above-mentioned desktop GIS) could help in assessing the amount of retention. The proposed characteristics of the catchment, which should be taken for assessment of small storage capacity, were described. On the grounds of the data taken for the basis of GIS, various hydrological situations were simulated. Results of these simulations were presented on maps as various colour areas for which values of retention are given in mm of water. Acquired results could be the basis for formation of such water circulation, which could possibly allow for the realization of a sustainable ecological development of the region. The spatial character of data taken for assessment of retention in the catchment indicates that the task can be an should be realized with system
