Aquatic weeds suppression by grass carp biomanipulation
2006
Maletin, S. | Stojanovic, S.
Exploring reclamation characteristics and efficiency of grass carp in purpose of keeping down excessive development of macrophyta vegetation in some sections in HS DTD (Hydrosystem Danube - Tisza - Danube), Serbia, it has been established that this herbivorous fish prefers submersal and emersal species of water weeds (Ceratophyllum demersum and Myriophyllum spicatum, i.e. Typha angustifolia and Typha latifolia), accomplishing at the same time good results of body weight and length growth, as well as good general condition. Based on the results of the research a conclusion could be made that grass carp represents extraordinary bioreclamation instrument in suppression of undesirable expansion of aquatic plants in hydro reclamation systems. For efficient of bio-reclamation it is necessary to control fish planting and preparing detail program of size, age and density of planted fish as well as hunting older samples in due time. The best results in maintenance of optimum cover of aquatic weeds could be expected in combining of this biological method with common mechanical (reaping) and chemical treatments.
