Body condition of milk type cows in two systems of housing
2006
Antov, A. | Jankovic, D.
The judgement of body condition of Holstein-Friesian cows has been done in two localities with different housing methods, by numerical pointing from 1 to 5 in the course of four calendar years (2001-2004). Judgement was done in 2,997 cows in free housing and 3,912 cows in tied up housing. It was found that the largest number of cows (51.99%) in the free housing was judged by point 3, while in tied up housing approximate participation of judged cows was 37.73% by the point 3 and 35.76% by the point 3.5. In a group with poor condition (points 1 or 2) were newly calved cows with metabolic problems and veterinary interventions during and after parturition, with problems in feet and high producing animals at the beginning of lactation. Speaking about other extremes, points 4.5 and 5 obtained animals with low production performances, those having short lactation and earlier drying- off or extended lactations due to long service period, as well as those which in the moment of judging were not in calf, but in long lactation period in certain cases in that group there were some older animals. Also the difference was found in pointing of the condition in daughters of individual sires.
