During 2003 and 2004 a series of crossing of lines with a gene for nuclear male sterility ms3 and four pure lines of the collection of the Centre for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka, Serbia, with good GCA and SCA values were selected (LH-1, LH-2, LH-3 and LH-4). In order to test the successfulness of hybridization, a marker gene chld, which reduces the chlorophyll, so leaves are yellow, was incroporated into these lines. Hybrids derived by crossing of male sterile lines to LH-lines had a high yield, elongated fruits of high quality and early ripening. All hybrid combinations had yellow leaves what clearly implies that the hybridization was successful. The hybrid LHF1 (ms5LH-1) had the best results. The application for its release under the name of Sirena F1 was made to the Commission for the Variety Releasing.
